He fulfilled his Internship and Residency in New York City, at the prestigious Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, which is now sponsored by Columbia University and Cornell University. After his residency, Dr. Goodjoin earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) from Johns Hopkins. He then accepted an invitation into the General Internal Medicine Fellowship program with Johns Hopkins. As of 2015, only 150 Doctors had ever completed this prominent Fellowship. One of those esteemed Doctors is Southeastern Primary’s own Dr. Richard Goodjoin.

Don’t count on Dr. Goodjoin talking about all of his accomplishments, though. Unless you ask him, he won’t mention anything about his 7 years as a Clinical Professor at the University of North Carolina, his equivalent time as a Physician at the Wake Medical Center or volunteering in the community. He’s far more likely to talk to you about his love for jazz music. He’s even more likely to talk to you about YOU. Improving the existing and ongoing health of his patients are what stays at the forefront of Dr. Goodjoin’s heart and mind.

Perhaps Dr. Goodjoin’s love for music is correlated to his passion for patient care. The redeeming qualities of good music reside in its organic and flowing nature. A good song, or concert, can help a person internalize and process anything that might have been going poorly in their lives. This is the way that Dr. Goodjoin feels about internal medicine. There is a flow and a purpose to a healthy, fully functioning body. Through education, experience, kindness, and authenticity, Dr. Goodjoin listens thoughtfully to his patients. He then works with them to come up with a concrete, embraceable plan for improving their health and lifestyle, gently guides them towards putting that plan in place. Honest, earnest, patient-centered care is what you get from Dr. Richard Goodjoin, and all of the great Physicians at Southeastern Primary Care Specialists.
